Aged 14 - 18?

Explorer Scouts are young people, usually aged between 14 and 18 years old. They make up the fourth Section of the Scouting family. There are many types of Explorer Scout Units, some may be linked to your local Scout Group, others may be based around different activities. Explorer Scouts get the chance to work with others in the District, not just the Unit. By doing this, they will get the chance to do many more activities, not just the ones the Unit organises.

What do Explorer Scouts wear?

Explorers wear a beige smart shirt, navy blue activity trousers and the appropriate scarf. A Scout joining the Explorer Scout Section, who has gained his or her Gold Chief Scout Award, may wear that award on his or her uniform until he or she gains the Platinum Chief Scout Award. He or she may also wear his or her Participation and Moving On awards.

What do Explorer Scouts do?

The Explorer Scouts’ programme offers a balanced range of activities covering the outdoors; skills; physical recreation; community service; environment; international; values and relationships.

Young Leaders

Some Explorers hone their leadership skills by helping in the running of sections in the Beavers, Cubs or Scouts. They receive the relevant training and this places them in a good position to take a full leader warrant after the age of 18.

Explorer Scout Expeditions

An important part of the new programme are the expeditions that Explorer Scouts need to complete to gain their Chief Scout Awards. A new support section has been formed to provide Explorer Scouts, ESLs and Scout Network members with practical support and advice to enable them to run their expeditions.

Comment from an Explorer Scout:

To anyone who hasn’t tried Scouting before, I’d say come on up and have a go! I think that most people don’t really know that Scouting is about activities, friendship and meeting people from other countries. I’ve been in the Movement since I was a Beaver and I still love it!

North Dorset Explorer Scouts

We meet most Tuesday evenings from 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm at Blandford Scout HQ for our at base meetings, but our outdoor meetings are anywhere around North Dorset.

Young Leader Explorer Scouts go to their local Scout Groups and help out whenever their section meets. You can do both!

Are you an adult? See our Volunteers Page

Do you want to be doing this too? Well you can!

You don’t need to have the skills, just be willing to learn, lead, have fun and want to help 14 – 18 year olds develop long lasting life skills. We will teach you how through our respected in house training scheme as part of a team of leaders.
