What is Scouting?
Scouting was started over 100 years ago by Baden-Powell, a victorious general who served in the Boer War who upon return to this country realised the need to teach life skills to young boys. He was our first Chief Scout, our current Chief Scout is Bear Grylls.
For over seventy years it was a movement entirely for boys and young men, but for many years now Scouting has been an adventure for all whatever your sex, creed, colour, religion or beliefs. Scouting is a fun organisation with some serious moments; members wear uniform but there is an emphasis on clothing fit for the activity. Often the only recognisable item of uniform is the 'necker' or scarf, a coloured triangular item which started life in the uniform as a basic item for use in first aid.
Progress through the various sections (see opposite) is organised in such a way that there can either be a continuation from 6 to 25 or young people can join at any point and still get the full benefit of a varied and accessible programme.
Scouting is a movement ever changing to meet the needs and wants of the young people of today but still providing experiences, challenges and life skills appropriate to where we are now. Experience the Scouting adventure for yourself.
